Description |
These two black and white film negatives depict father and son Hugh and Bill Ramsay standing beside the tool rack of their hardware store, Ramsay Hardware, as they prepare for the store's closing. Hugh began working at Vandervoort Hardware in 1929, continuing through the Great Depression and into the 1950's. In 1956, Hugh's son Bill also joined him in working at Vandervoort's. The pair bought the store in 1961, operating the business until 1975, when the Royal Bank of Canada (the owners of the building) refused to renew their lease. This photo, printed on page 16 of the Napanee Beaver's January 22nd 1975 issue, was taken as Hugh and Bill Ramsay prepared their hardware for the store's final sales and closing. Bill would go on to buy Purcell Hardware in Athens, making the commute from Napanee daily and continuing in the hardware business until his retirement. |
