Photograph of Hay Bay Methodist Church, built 1792, with David W. Allison among a group of unidentified individuals of all ages seated in front of the church and looking out from windows on the first and second floors. The text below the photograph reads: "The Old Adolphustown Church. The first Methodist Church built in Upper Canada. Erected in the spring and summer of 1792 under the direction of William Losee, the first Methodist itinerant preacher in Upper Canada. Enlarged and rebuilt in 1834, and used until 1864. In it the first winter court of the Midland District was held in January, 1795. In front of it the ten young people were drowned June 29th, 1819, and eight of them buried side by side in the graveyard there. The view was taken June 22d, 1892, at the Centennial Gathering, Rev. Mr. Hortan? the Minister." |
