Description Note |
This certificate was awarded by the Protestant Association of 'Prentice Boys of America to Brother George Brown on June 9th, 1897 for being a "True 'Prentice Boy". The 'Prentice Boys also known as the Apprentice Boys of Derry is a protestant associated fraternal society that was founded in Northern Ireland in 1814. The society aims to commemorate the 1689 siege of Derry by the Catholic King James II of England and Ireland and VII of Scotland when he laid siege to the walled city of Derry, which was a protestant stronghold of the time. The 'Prentice Boys of Ontario have a headquarters in Toronto and this sect appears to have met at Victoria Hall on Amherst Island. Based on census records there is one George Brown on Amherst Island that would line up with the time period of the certificate. George Brown was born on February 1865 to William and Margaret Brown. He joined the 'Prentice Boys on July 3rd, 1889 and was considered a "True 'Prentice Boy" on June 9th, 1897. George lived with his mother following his father's death, working with her as a farmer. Sometime between 1911 and 1921 George married Elizabeth Jane Reid and stopped living with his mother. The couple had their son Avery Edward Brown around 1921 on Amherst Island. George passed away in 1941 around the age of 76. He is buried with Elizabeth in Glenwood Cemetery on Amherst Island. |
