Oil painting of a waterfall possibly on the Napanee River. This was painted by Lawyer W.S. Herrington two weeks before he died. It was given to Miss Margaret Nolan (the secretary in his law office for years). Mr. Herrington died July 17th, 1947. |
Description Note |
This painting of a waterfall possibly found on the Napanee River was painted by W.S. Herrington two weeks before his death on July 17th, 1947. Walter Steven Herrington was born in Ameliasburg Township, Prince Edward County in 1860 to Caroline (nee Morden) and Stillman Mills Herrington. During his childhood he was educated at Belleville Collegiate. Water graduated with his Bachelor of Arts from Victoria College, Cobourg in 1883. He then went on to graduated from Osgoode Hall, Toronto in 1886. He was called to the bar immediately after his second graduation and established his law practice in Napanee with his business partner Stanley Warner, working within this practice for the next 60 years. In 1890 Walter married Mary Tilley and the couple proceeded to have three children Margaret Eleanor Herrington (1891-1970), Caroline Mary (nee Herrington) Sneath (1892-1967), and Walter Harold Gould Herrington (1898-1954). Mary passed away in 1927 at the age of 60. Walter then married Cora Benjamin from Yarker in 1928. In his personal life, Walter was a prominent member of Masonic No. 9 Union Lodge within Napanee. He was elected as the Worshipful Master of the lodge in 1894, 1898 to 1901 and 1905. In 1905 he was also elected to become the District Deputy Grand Master of the Frontenac District. In 1931 he was given the high honour of becoming the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Ontario, holding the position for the following two years. Walter was an author and historian, publishing 4 books between 1910 and 1931 with a focus on local history and the masonic lodges. He was also a founder of the Lennox and Addington Historical Society, becoming president of the society in 1916, and was president of the Napanee Public Library. Walter's second wife Cora passed away in 1932. Walter himself passed away at the age of 87 in 1947. He is buried with his first wife, Mary, and one of his daughters, Margaret, in Riverside Cemetery, Napanee. |
