Scope & Content |
This series includes one pamphlet: the 48th Annual Announcement of the Faculty of Medicine, McGill University (Session of 1880–81). This document outlines the curriculum, faculty, fees, and admission requirements for the medical faculty. It also documents the academic affiliations of both Dr. Allan Ruttan and his son, Dr. Allan Montgomery Ruttan. Specifically, it confirms that Allan Montgomery Ruttan of Napanee fulfilled the requirements for the degree of M.D., C.M. (p. 27), and lists him among the students of the university in 1879 (p. 36). It also records Allan Ruttan of Napanee as a Doctor of Medicine in 1882, and A.M. Ruttan of Ormstown, Quebec as holding the same designation in 1880 (p. 41). |
Description Note |
Dr. Allan Montgomery Ruttan, son of Dr. Allan Ruttan of Newburgh, Ontario, was born in Newburgh and educated at McGill University, where he studied medicine. He is listed in the university’s records as a student in 1879 and as having fulfilled the requirements for the M.D., C.M. degree. He practiced medicine in Quebec for a number of years before relocating to New York, where he worked as a chemist for two decades. Later in life, he moved west to Lloydminster, arriving at the same time as the Barr Colonists, and ultimately settled in Provost, Alberta, where he resided for the last 22 years of his life.Dr. Ruttan retired from active life several years prior to his death and had experienced declining health for approximately four years. He passed away at his home in Provost on the eighteenth anniversary of his marriage, at the age of 74. At the time of his death, he was described as the last remaining scion of a family long noted in Canada for its scientific contributions. He was a descendant of a Huguenot family that emigrated from La Rochelle, France, in 1784. He was survived by his widow and a stepson, William. |
